Making a £13000 turntable

Näkymät 2,1 milj.

Another daily grind video, this time the full construction process of a Garrard 301 turntable plinth from start to finish. These layered ply plinths are what I most commonly make.

edit to add, forgot to mention a thanks to Bob at Inspire Hifi for providing the last clip of the completed turntable in use.
The music used was Blow the man down by the Midshipment glee club from the FIplace copyright free music library. this is not the original music being played in the clip; I had to edit in the above to avoid copyright infringment.

Yeah, but 13 grand though. Do you think you'd be able to hear the difference to one that cost 1 grand? I think not.

Others have said it along the lines of "why make such a deck for that table"....or that assembly.... there are some truly amazing decks out there for less money. LP12 amongst the top of the list. this is a beauty of a project, but I have to question the cost and the actual sound coming from it.

i know no one is seeing the underside, but that was getting the same ocd treatment as the top. The client speaker boxes at the end of the video was going and get that same outer treatment as well to match that turntable. love the high solid clear for long-lasting and easy to clean. the rear plug was getting stainless steel alan key bolts to match the arm. but your work is so awesome if your clients paying that kind of cash for arms etc a little extra to push your limits for the perfect finish piece should be mentioned to them. every square inch of your fabulous work ., i'm subscribing !!

All of this work so that you can install a dated Gerrard turntable....a turntable that is neither direct drive, nor belt drive? A turntable that uses an idler wheel (jockey pulley assembly) to operate? The wow and flutter must be off the charts! Thanks, but I'll stick with a good ol' SL-1200. Beautiful craftsmanship though!

Brian 9 päivää sitten
Very pretty, but i fail to see where the £13k value is. OK £10k for the hardware and £3K for the woodwork. Now I get it.

That "granite slab" is too thin for his application. Hard to believe this rather minor bit of plywoodworking is commanding $19000 and its bottom goes without veneer. This is not making a turntable, it is merely making a turntable base. Anyway, it is no sign of genius when the cost is no object, but to bring this level of performance to the mass market is a different thing altogether. Still, it will come.

£13,000 POUNDS?? So some extremely rich person actually paid that much for it? Because being DIY you obviously cant say its worth that much unless a (rich) person actually bought it for that price, which is also crazy.

Great carpentry... I just noticed the Garrard 301 transcription deck. I always wanted a 401 in my youth, but couldn't afford it. My mum worked for Garrard in Swindon, halcyon days, before they were brought by a Brazilian company and disappeared. My only other comment is that the idler wheel would introduce rumble. I wonder how well this has been refurbed?

high end audio is a different world....nice front end plus sonus faber maxima speakers can put you right into the midst of the orchestra pit and choir, and you can identify where every singer is standing, and on a good day what they are wearing.....its hard to believe unless you get into the proper high end setup in a specialized acoustic room....this plinth is nice and builder has experience and confidence....to my way of thinking it came out looking too much like a piece of plastic with excessive plastic clear coating and an automobile finish....its nice but it doesn['t look like rare dense high quality dignified hardwood anymore....it looks like plastic veneer over plywood which is what it is.....for the price the customer paid you'd think he could be rewarded with honest real hardwood
claymore cluepile
claymore cluepile 17 päivää sitten
i should add that the finished item suffers from the defect of being too perfect....it looks like it was simply CNC machined out of a 3 cu ft block of patterned acrylic in about 6 hours.....it has no character....the artisan builder would do well to step back and consider how japanese artisans maike top end pottery and knife blades...they start with the purest best materials and then focus more on bringing out the 'soul' of the item than on a perfect machine-like shape and finish....every japanese high end blade has an irregular pattern on the cutting edge and the best japanese high end pottery is never perfectly round or true, but has the irregularities carefully curated into the pure base material preserved that are the mark of a master artisan, no just a skilled technician.......this plinth tradesman should up his game and start making plinths out of solid aged best quality hardwood hearts and leave the carefully selected and enhanced surface imperfections that compliment the material and identify the maker
