New Nintendo Switch Pro Report Confirms 4K, DLSS & New SoC; Why a 2021 Launch Is Uncertain (ft. MVG)

Näkymät 19 t.
97% 185 4

A new report from Bloomberg has corroborated many of the key points we have shared in recent weeks; those being a new SoC equipped with DLSS features to achieve a 4K gaming experience. However, a key point of contention remains: release date. While Bloomberg remains firm on a 2021 holiday release, we explain why this release date is likely to change due to the growing uncertainty in the chip supply climate.
Furthermore, we discuss how backwards compatibility may be approached, how Nintendo must perfect their marketing strategy with an attractive price model, and how current Switch will benefit from the improved hardware offered by the Switch Pro revision.

If the New 3DS is used as a forecast for how they would address patching previous games, it won't happen. They did not go back and patch previous games to make use of the more robust hardware and thumbstick. Most new games did take advantage of the new hardware while still able to run on other models. Only a couple games were exclusive to the New 3DS. That makes sense since the install base was and will be very limited compared to the overall install base.

whatever Nintendo price it at, they know what they are doing. they have the analytics to know who is playing the system, and if there is a large enough older audience who can afford the 399usd price tag. they know a lot more about who play the switch than we do, they have all the data. so if they mark it at 399, it will probably sell well regardless. furthermore, handhelds are much trickier to work with than standard console. you have strict limits on space.. which the PS5 doesnt have to deal with. that thing is massive and it doesnt really matter. so getitng all tech into a small form factor is very expensive indeed. so i wouldnt say "thats a lot of money for a handheld". i think we got to get use to the idea that if you want top tech, you got to pay for it in a handheld. in my country the current switch sells for almost 400usd anyway lol.

Nintendo should make a new switch bc the new Xbox and ps5 is made in 21 and since the last switch model was realeased in 2019 people are going to buy new systems since the new game consoles are being made in 2021. I think less people will buy a game console that came out last year and buy a console that came out this year.

How many systems did the original Switch launch with? Of course, it's $399 because Nintendo gonna 'Tendo. Regards the X1 compatibility, doesn't the X1 Nano have tensor cores? Isn't that essentially an X1 capable of AI Upscalling?
Penguin 101
Penguin 101 Uukausi sitten
If they could get Age of Calamity to suddenly go from sub HD, sub 30fps to 4K at 60fps I think that'd be nice. In all honesty, I think the entire Nintendo Library should get DLSS patches. Third party-wise I'd like to see third-party games like Witcher 3, Doom and Doom Eternal, alongside Woilfenstien 2 get DLSS patches within the launch window. But those are more complicated because it may mean upgrading custom textures and settings to match the new hardware before being run through the tensor core pipeline, so those may need more work. I'd argue that you'd get Monolith Soft to implement DLSS on most of your games since their games like Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and 2 require DLSS implementation, they worked on BOTW 1 and 2 so have experience in those engines at least, so they could focus on updating their own games and BOTW 1 and 2 at the very least.

how much extra work would it be if nintendo already had dlss support in botw 2 and would then add and fix it onto botw 1? also, if they do opt for an tx1 lite for compatibility, would the new SOC's performance gains still be there or would it run like it does currently on the tx1 switch? and if backwards compatibility is an issue, how does pc manage to do it with new architecture's every 1/2 years in cpu's and gpu's?

I think you guys are really missing the point here. It seems to me that you are misinformed on how “well” DLSS actually works. It is still a piece of garbage that nobody wants to use. I can see the reason why Nintendo would use it but that doesn’t take away the fact that it is still and most likely will remain crap. You can find enough videos on the web that will state this and if you have hardware that is strong enough you don’t need any of this trickery and there in lays the problem. Also I think you guys are too focused on the Bloomberg article and don’t consider other factors. My estimate is that they will launch a Switch this October so they can make the most out of the holidays . This switch will cost 350€ and will have the oled screen and the 4k dock. Nothing else will be changed on the internals. This is a test run they will do to pull in the masses with their pokemon remake game and also get people hyped again for the console. While they do this, they have more time to spend on the switch pro. Nobody will be hasseling them for a revision of the console cauz they just did that. So this takes the pressure of the real new switch they will launch in 2022. Because it will take more time than anticipated, the Switch pro will not launch in the fiscal year of 2021 but rather in summer of 2022. As stated it will have all the bells and whistles that have been leaked untill now and it will absolutely cost 400€. If this should be wrong and they do launch the pro in october of this year I do agree that they will not have alot of units however it will still cost 400€ because of this. This will scare of the plebs and only die hard fans will be willing to spend that much on a Nintendo console. The reasoning for this is because the ps5 and new xbox cost that amount of money so nobody in their right mind (next to fanboys) will give that amount of money to Nintendo if they can get a more powerful system for the same price. The games exclusivity that the different consoles have will be negated by the raw performance the other systems have in comparison to the switch. Furthermore, saying that we are moving away from “the terraflops” is just shortsighted. Nintendo has never been on the bleeding edge and they never will and everybody knows this. If you want the best (for consoles) you go for playstation and xbox, if you want casual fun with subpar graphics you go Nintendo. The speed and raw performance will always matter for everything technology wise so don’t pretend it doesn’t. I understand the argument you make for it but it is misguided. They will not relaunch the switch lite because by then (you guys say 2023 earliest) it will be so outdated it will just be throwing money out of the window just to see how it flows in the wind. By 2023 they will put in motion their plans for a new console and the switch will steadily be fased out.

399 is a lot to ask? People pay several hundred bucks just to get bigger internal storages on their phones.... what makes you guys think a new SOC, 4k capabilites, an OLED Screen as well as more RAM will be 50 bucks? Of course some parents will wait but the new found performance will be filled by enthusiasts amd gamers in general. 400 bucks is pretty much a common price for a console... feelings because it can be used as a handheld and a handheld shouldn't be expensive ( while carrying aroung 500 bucks and above phones...) isn't an argument.

They have to enable DLSS in at least MK8, Smash, AC and Mario to show people who own the old version that there is a reason to get the new one. New games are important, espeically for a launch title but showing the potential improvement to older titles via updates will catch people who will hope for more and more of their already owned games will get that type of improvement. And looking at UE having implemented DLSS in its feature set, this could , potentially, give all the UE games a massive advantage over any other Engine and push DLSS into the spotlight (where Nvidia is trying to push it towards every since it launched but still hidden behind rather pricey GPU's).

I moved over to the Xbox 360 and then PS4 since departing from Nintendo consoles back in the GameCube years. I decided to jump back in Nintendo console a few months after the switch release. Switch is my primary console and I know more powerful consoles are on the market but the switch just hits my gaming spot perfectly. Just listening to this podcast is giving me to hype overload for a new revision. I’ll be well happy with sharper gaming images and better FPS.

This has to launch this year. There is a race to get this AI tech into homes. Nintendo have a head start with probably the most effective version of it thanks to NVidia but AMD have a solution in the works too.. All parties concerned want to be first to market. It tends to trump all other concerns. I'm starting to believe the new president when he said they were looking at state of the art. This new Switch sounds jaw dropping. It will hit the ground running, and any moaning about splitting the fan base is as relevent as a new generation of consoles. Iteration or successor. Hmm...I think the term hybrid will probably extend to this concept too lol. Exciting times.

Hey Nate, and MVG, Re: the concept of a switch revision that uses a different (but similar) SoC architecture being a problem at code level? The current switch is running Unix for the os, the cpu type is still ARM64, as it is in both the new chip and the old one, the only issue is the games rely on a graphics engine / graphics driver that the OS provides , so they only have to have the OS handle graphics driver differences in the API level as just a "these features are / are not supported by this hardware" and just have the game or OS handle what to do when it detects the different architectures, the thing is ... In linux (which is largely similar in how the code runs to Unix) , a 64 bit ARM chip can run software or even OS written for a 32 bit ARM chip, without issue , and both new and old switch units would have 64 bit ARM CPU, so , maybe the new chip has a faster top speed, and in some areas have some new architecture , but usually these chips run highly similar CPU functionality. The GPU and some other support components would be the largest difference. I think the SoC / OS will just automatically be cross compatible, only allowing newer features in the newer hardware.

Everyone is saying that the switch “pro”, based on its description, is going to seem strong and look good using the tech, but in reality it won’t be as powerful. So why does it matter if its actual power, compared to a ps4 pro, is weaker when this tech makes it look just as good if not better? Why does the weaker power matter when it looks better? Does it cause other restraints or is it more so just gamers like having high power?

The price of 399 won't be an issue for a few reasons. 1) people are used to the idea of paying 2-4 times that for mobile devices. 2) it will possibly be marketed as a "switch premium". 3) Breath of the wild 2, Bayonetta 3, Metroid Prime 4 and and new Mario game announcement and whatever 3rd party games devs wanted to put on the current switch but couldn't due to performance issues and it's sold. For regular switch owners they can still get the game at reduced performance such as the case with BOTW on the Wii U and the Switch

Honestly you could have the same software architecture built in....x86 is still x86 even using a different hardware architecture. The same instructions can be available.

Based on information relayed to me, the intent is to position it as a revision type release.

Regarding "backward" compatibility, I think it's likely the new SoC expands on the feature set of the X1, but can fall back to a state where only the speeds and features of the original X1 chip can be used, in a manner similar to the New 3DS being able to downclock to original 3DS speeds, disable the L2 cache and additional CPU cores and configure memory space to match the original model.

Great episode guys! While you have talked about the switch pro quite a bit, you guys have done a good job on zoning into each possible aspect of it each episode to give a better idea on what the product could look like altogether which is really nice.
