The V-berth is looking DAMN SPIFFY! Will you be able to program the magic digital switch box thingie to turn on the "mood lighting" and start your Barry White playlist simultaneously via bluetooth? Asking for a friend...
MikeAG333 Uukausi sitten
@dee bowen Don't do that with plated stuff, though.....like thin "brass" hinges. You'll end up with just steel.

Spiffy no doubt. Just a thought, I’d look at putting a couple of lights underneath the storage cabinetry in the forward berth, perhaps on a separate circuit controlled in the berth. Nice to gave that lighting for guests to read by. Plus, I just like a well lit room

Don't you have to put insulation below the water line? also I didn't see that you put some under the mahagony in the vbirh...

Everything is looking tip-top-shape. BTW don't you have hardware stores in Denmark like a; Lowes or Home Deport or Ace Hardware - You order a lot online for delivery. I usually make 20 trips to Lowes for my projects; 10 to purchase and 10 to return items...

Just soak the brass bits in acid to remove all the oxidation from places you can't reach. Citric acid or vinegar or whatever. And do you want some Lanolin? Chapped lips, turn buckles, hinges: it works for everything. Less toxic and less runny than engine oil (actually supposed to be high pressure resistant and suitable for under the waterline). I'll send you some if you want. I... bought half a kilo but I think all I needed was 60g for the next 2 years.

Hi Great video in the future the best way to deal with things like corroded hinges is to soak them in coke a cola for about 3 hours then presto no more stuck hinges

Mads... I think your crossed fingers work just great. Your level of attention to detail and suprelative craftsmanship escapes most who follow this project. Drilling those pilot holes for the mahogany stripping in the forward V-berth elicited chills on my part..."DANGER WIL ROBINSON!" Without planning and stop limiting, you could easily put the better part of 189 screws through the outer hull of Athena. Yet, you didn't even mention the risk, you are so non-nonchalant about your premier efforts now. Bravo sir. This boat will be 10x the quality she came out of the factory with. We are all in awe of your efforts and that is why we return each week. (A reference for those not familiar.. fiplace.info/loft/videot/aoCDgJ9v1WzHrX4)

Wow, Madds, you're knocking this out of the park, aren't you?! Just a comment on your finish choice for the lower section of the forward wall of your V-berth. Considering that white will show up any footwear scuff marks, I was wondering if you're planning to install a bit of baseboard molding there? You could varnish it just as you have the upper section. Just a thought...

Modern building methods recommends a thick PVC layer behind plasterboard to prevent humidity passing though and condensing on the cooler outer wall and insulation. As you have only GRP and cold water on the outside (wall)it would be worth considering behind the slats. I welcome feedback on what others think its only a suggestion as the slats are coming off again.

You have done a very nice job with the boat, one thing that bothers me though is that the outside is completely white. Gets a little boring but you may have thought to add liote stretches and lines in some nice color as a contrast. Or should you wear it all white?

I think that GREEN on the hinges is tarnished: Flour, Salt, and White Vinegar Combine equal parts of all three ingredients to create a paste. Apply a thin layer of that paste to the tarnished brass and leave it for an hour before rinsing with warm water and drying. There are a few other recipes but have at it here and see if that helps!

Mads calls sander "his buddy" , so when are we seeing it encapsulated in lexan and mounted on the boat? Also let us never forget the satin finish fixes a major issue as the fluffball Jukel WILL mark his territory with shed. And while I appreciate Denmark's long storied history of Viking shenanigans or worse.. but do you really think you can find a Finnish person to paint the mahogany with? How long of checking Finn's would it take to find a Satin Finn instead of the much more normal Glossy Finn. LastlyI think the EU may frown on the Finnish paintbrush approach to coating the wood Headline would read. " Dane, and Norwegian, found hunting Finn's in the Baltic sea.

Hi Mads, one thing you should consider is to put in a watertight companionway hatch instead of the old one. If the boat somehow would tip over in rough seas due to instability or other reasons, a fully watertight hatch is a somewhat cheap lifesaver because the interior of the boat acts as a watertight pod. Kind regards from your neighbors in Sweden😃

The V-berth is looking SPIFFY indeed :-) ... but ... it might be not a bad idea to paint the bulkhead to the chainlocker white after all ... would make the space look longer / bigger. As it stands the V- birth is rather dark ... especially compared to the rest of bright and shiny Athena. keep up your amazing work ... whoop whoop XD

If you can't get your freezer in a timely manner, consider opting for Vitrifrigo, an Italian brand. We bought a 2 drawer 150litre fridge freezer. Perfect for cruising. Each drawer can be set up as a or fridge or a freezer i.e. a fridge/freezer, a fridge/fridge, a freezer/freezer or a freezer/fridge. For cruising we purchased a DRW180A V12/24 STEELOCK. Fill both drawers up with frozen food and when one is reduced in volume we turn it into a fridge. Top shelf build quality and after a number of domestic and cheap imports we finally found a brand that seems to work well and fit our needs. Not cheap, but then again we were getting through a cheap unit every two seasons, so hopefully the long term outcome will be worth the effort.

Everything looks pretty dang spiffy! A word of caution. I have padded "leather" head liners on my boat. We are full time cruisers. Lately we have developed a mildew/mold issue on these surfaces but not on the fiberglass sections. This mold/mildew is very ugly and extremely difficult to clean. Any treatment with bleach or vinegar cleans the surface temporarily but seems to drive the roots deep into the material where it survives and the surface mold soon reappears. It has been a real struggle. So, for what it is worth, choose wisely.

In regard to not receiving the Freezer, i know it's alot of work, but you might be better off building one yourself, why ?, i don't know off any manufacture's that build one with adequate insulation, far from it, the Freezer uses far more BTU's to hold temperature than a fridge, and will require alot more running time, i.e., listening to the genset running, something to think about.
